Chayote is a vegetable that is often processed into various typical Indonesian dishes. Usually chayote is used as a mixture for soup, lodeh, or cooked alone into various stir-fries. Its soft texture and slightly sweet taste make this vegetable popular with many people.
However, despite these advantages, chayote is known as a vegetable that is quite difficult to process. Not without reason, chayote has abundant sap. Well, this sap will make the chayote taste bitter if it is not removed immediately. Therefore, chayote must be processed properly so that the sap can be removed.
So far, one of the most common ways to remove chayote sap is by rubbing the vegetable. So, usually the chayote that you want to cook will be cut in half. Then the two sides that have been cut will be rubbed until the white sap comes out.
This method can indeed make the sap in the chayote come out and be cleaned . However, usually not all of the sap actually comes out and can be removed. Therefore, there are other stages that need to be done.
Luckily, an Instagram user @safaralles once shared a special trick for removing sap from chayote. Through one of the uploaded videos, he admitted that he added one kitchen ingredient, namely salt, to remove the chayote sap.
The final step, discard the water and transfer the chayote to a colander. So, while draining it, rinse the chayote again and keep squeezing it. After kneading for a moment, drain the chayote. That way, the chayote is ready to be processed with various kinds of spices. Compared to just rubbing it, this method tends to be more effective in removing chayote sap completely. If it is free of sap, chayote becomes tastier and its natural sweet taste is also more pronounced. Guaranteed to be more delicious and soft when eaten.
