Brilio.net - A stone mortar is often used as a choice for grinding food ingredients, from chili sauce to seasonings. The reason is, the stone mortar has a harder texture, so the food ingredients can be smoothed quickly when mashed. However, stone mortars sold on the market are not necessarily made from real stone.
There are a number of traders who are not honest when selling, saying that the mortars they sell are made of stone, even though they are cement. Mortars made from cement are at risk of contaminating food, because they contain dangerous chemicals. These chemicals not only interfere with taste, but also increase the risk of health problems.
One sign that a mortar is not made from real stone, you can see from its weight. Genuine stone mortars are generally quite heavy, in contrast to fake mortars which tend to be lighter. On the other hand, the color of the mortar can also be determining. Real stone mortars usually have a more natural grayish black or even greenish color. While fake stone mortars, the color just looks black or gray evenly.
Well, there is also another way to check whether the stone mortar in your house is real or fake from the Instagram account user @indah3yani. This woman explained that there are two ways and one of them can be practiced with the help of one simple kitchen ingredient.

The first way, first prepare a bucket or basin that is wide enough to submerge the mortar in it. Then, add clean water and soak the mortar in it. Let the mortar soak for a few minutes.
"Observe the mortar for 20-30 minutes, are there any bubbles coming out," said the owner of the Instagram account @indah3yani, quoted by BrilioFood on Wednesday (3/7).

So, if there are lots of air bubbles coming out of the mortar while soaking it in water, it could be that the mortar is not made from real stone, but cement. In contrast, if there is no reaction whatsoever from the mortar, it could be that your mortar is made from real stone.

If you're still not sure about the first method, let's try the second method. Prepare the main kitchen ingredient, namely rice. Put a little rice in a mortar, then cover with enough clean water. Grind the rice with a pestle.

After grinding the rice until it is semi-fine, immediately observe the color. If the rice does not change color, that is, it remains white as before, this means your mortar is made from real stone. On the other hand, if the rice turns black or gray, it means your mortar is made of cement.
