Rust has the potential to contaminate the grated spices.

Brilio.net - A spice grater is one of the irreplaceable kitchen tools. With its simple shape, this tool makes it easy to process ingredients such as onions, ginger, turmeric, or chilies into a smooth, ready-to-use texture. Whether for cooking everyday dishes or special recipes, a spice grater is always a mainstay for creating maximum flavor in cooking.

However, behind its important function, spice graters have one common problem, namely rust. If not properly maintained, especially after frequent exposure to water or acidic spices, the metal surface of the grater can rust. In addition to making this tool look dirty, rust also has the potential to contaminate the grated spices. This is certainly worrying, because rust can affect the taste of food and is a health risk.

To prevent rust, spice grater maintenance must be done carefully. Cleaning immediately after use, drying it with a clean cloth, and storing it in a dry place are simple steps that are very effective. Applying a little vegetable oil to the surface of the grater can also help prevent rust.

But if rust has already dirty the grater, there is an important step that must be taken, namely cleaning it. Luckily, an Instagram user @mellamaryana once shared a simple trick in cleaning rust on a spice grater. Through one of the videos uploaded, he admitted that he only needed 2 simple ingredients.

As reported by brilio.net from Instagram @mellamaryana on Thursday (9/1), the simple ingredients in question are toothpaste and vinegar. Who would have thought, these two ingredients can be really effective in removing stubborn stains, including rust on spice graters. Therefore, the grater becomes clean again.

Now, for how to use it yourself, you can directly apply toothpaste to the entire rusty part of the grater. After applying it evenly, then rinse the grater with vinegar. If so, scrub the surface of the grater with an old toothbrush.

When toothpaste and vinegar are combined, they work in synergy to thoroughly clean your spice grater. The toothpaste provides an abrasive effect to lift the rust, while the vinegar breaks down the rust that has already been removed, making it easier to remove. Therefore, the rust simply comes off after scrubbing.

Then when it is clean, you can rinse the spice grater with running water. Make sure there is no cleaner residue or rust stains attached. That way, the spice grater will be shiny and clean again like new.

Indeed, toothpaste basically contains fine abrasives that are useful for gently cleaning surfaces without damaging the material. When combined with vinegar, toothpaste can work more effectively in eroding the layer of rust that sticks to the spice grater. The abrasive in toothpaste helps lift the attached rust particles, while vinegar acts to dissolve the rust and facilitate the removal process.

On the other hand, table vinegar contains acetic acid, which has the ability to dissolve rust by breaking down the iron oxide that forms on the metal surface. This acid works by weakening the bonds between the iron oxide (rust) molecules and the metal surface, making it easier for the rust to come off. Vinegar also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which help clean and remove other dirt that may be on the surface of the grater.
