Brilio.net - Shallots are often used as a basic spice in Indonesian cooking. Starting from stir-fries, soups, to seasonings for curry and rendang, many people use shallots. Even though they are small, these red onions can make dishes even more delicious and aromatic. Apart from being mixed in cooking, shallots are also often fried to be used as a topping on food.
Before processing, these tiny onions must be peeled first. The goal is to remove the dry skin layer. Even though it looks easy, the process of peeling shallots is actually homework in itself. The reason is, when peeled, red onions sometimes make your eyes sting to the point of crying.
Reporting from customs.go.jp, peeled and sliced red onions can release enzymes that can turn into sulfuric acid when in the air. Well, this enzyme is what causes the eyes to sting due to irritation and produce tears.
As a solution, you can imitate the method shared by netizen Instagram user @sharajevoo. He has a way to peel red onions that won't make you cry and is easy to do in 3 minutes, you know. Even the results can also be smooth. Curious about how?

The first step is to prepare the shallots to be peeled, then place them in a container. After that, soak the shallots using plain water or warm water.

So, if you use regular water, you can soak the shallots for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, if you use warm water, you can just soak the shallots for 2-3 minutes.
"Don't soak shallots in too hot water because when cooked, the aromatics can be reduced," explained the account owner, as quoted by BrilioFood from Instagram @sharajevoo, Thursday (13/6).

When it's finished soaking, take the onions. Then peel as usual. By peeling the skin like this, the shallots become smooth. This method is also guaranteed to make you cry and is super easy to imitate.
The video uploaded by the Instagram account @sharajevoo was liked by 79 thousand accounts and received many responses from netizens.
