Brilio.net - Tomatoes are a food ingredient that is often used in various kinds of dishes. When ripe, tomatoes have a refreshing sweet taste with a slight acidity, so they can add a complex flavor dimension to dishes. Because of this sour and sweet taste, tomatoes are commonly used in mixed dishes such as stir-fries, soups, or as a base for sauces.
In Indonesia, tomatoes are also often used as a base for chili sauce. However, in some recipes, sometimes only a few tomatoes are used. Therefore, many people usually use half a tomato for cooking. Meanwhile, the remaining pieces will be saved to be used to cook other menus.
Unfortunately, there is one problem that many people often experience when using half a tomato for cooking. Leftover pieces that are stored often rot easily and become mushy. Not only that, the remaining tomato pieces can also become moldy even if stored in the refrigerator.
Many people then rack their brains to overcome this. One of them is TikTok user @rifa_ardiyanti. Through one of the uploaded videos, he admitted that he had his own tricks when storing leftover tomato pieces so that they didn't rot easily and get moldy.
So, the trick is to rely on one kitchen ingredient. Reported by BrilioFood on Friday (5/4), the kitchen ingredient used is table salt. Well, this table salt has antimicrobial properties which can help prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that cause rot in tomatoes.
How to use it is quite easy. Take the remaining tomato pieces that you want to store. Then add a little salt to the tomato slices. After that, spread the salt evenly.

Next, put the tomato pieces in an airtight container. After that, put it in the refrigerator in the chiller section. You can place it on the door or bottom shelf of the refrigerator. That way, the remaining tomato pieces will not rot and become moldy for days.

Basically, when salt is applied to tomatoes, it creates an environment that is less suitable for microorganisms to thrive. This is because salt absorbs water from microorganisms and makes it difficult for them to survive.
Apart from that, salt can also reduce enzyme activity which can change the color and texture of tomatoes, thus inhibiting the rapid ripening process and spoilage. Thus, salt will help extend the shelf life of tomatoes and maintain their freshness and quality for longer. Don't be surprised if tomatoes last longer when put in the refrigerator.
