Brilio.net - Lontong is one of Indonesia's typical foods that is often used as an accompaniment to various dishes to replace rice. Dishes such as satay, chicken opor, or gado-gado are more delicious with the presence of lontong which has a soft texture and neutral taste. The popularity of lontong as an alternative to rice makes it a favorite choice in various events, be it family parties or big day celebrations.

However, making lontong is a challenge for some people. The cooking process takes a long time, often for hours, making lontong not always an efficient choice. In addition, the traditional method used to cook lontong, which is by boiling it in water for a long time, requires a lot of gas fuel. This can certainly be a consideration for those of you who want to save energy and time in the kitchen.

To overcome this deficiency, several alternatives can be considered. An Instagram user @dibasenja once shared a simple trick in making lontong through one of the uploaded videos. He claimed that it only took 12 minutes to make chewy and soft lontong.

As reported by BrilioFood from Instagram @dibasenja on Tuesday (1/10), the netizen applied the 5-30-7 method. To be more precise, prepare the rice first. In the video, Instagram user @dibasenja uses rice cooked with quite a lot of water (the amount is more than cooking regular rice).

The soft texture of the rice will make the lontong dense. Well, you can immediately print the rice on a banana leaf that has been cleaned. Then wrap and pin both ends using a skewer.

Next, boil water in a pan. When it boils, add the rice that has been wrapped in banana leaves. Then cover the pan and boil for 5 minutes with the pan covered.

After 5 minutes, turn off the stove. Then let it sit for 30 minutes. At this stage, make sure the pan is still tightly closed. Then turn the stove back on and boil the lontong for 7 minutes starting from when the water boils again. So, the total boiling time is only 12 minutes.

Once cooked, immediately remove and drain the lontong. It is better to let it cool first so that the lontong is denser and chewier. Only then open the banana leaf and the lontong is ready to be consumed.

"I think it works, and it's chewy too," said Instagram user @dibasenja.
