Brilio.net - Wooden furniture is often a mainstay choice in the kitchen because of its natural nature and friendliness to coated cookware such as Teflon. One of the most frequently used wooden furniture is a wooden spatula. This spatula is known to be sturdy, comfortable to hold, and does not easily damage the surface of the pan or pot when used. In addition, wooden spatulas also provide a classic and natural aesthetic impression in the kitchen.
However, behind its advantages, wooden spatulas have weaknesses that need to be considered, namely being susceptible to mold if not properly maintained. The water-absorbing nature of wood makes the spatula easily damp, especially if it is often exposed to water and is not dried immediately. This condition can be an ideal place for mold and bacteria to grow, which can ultimately affect the cleanliness of the food being processed.
To keep the wooden spatula durable and free from mold, proper care is needed. The reason is, washing the spatula with soap alone is not enough to remove mold stains. It takes several cleaning processes so that the spatula can be maximally clean and sterile, so that it can be used again for cooking.
Luckily, Instagram user @qualitygreens.id once shared a simple trick to clean a wooden spatula. Through one of the videos uploaded, he admitted to only relying on a few simple ingredients found at home. As reported by brilio.net from Instagram @qualitygreens.id on Sunday (26/1), the simple ingredients in question are salt, lemon, and cooking oil.

Well, the way to clean it is quite easy. First, wash the wooden spatula thoroughly using soap and a dishwashing sponge first. After that, soak the wooden spatula in warm water for about 10-15 minutes.
"This soaking can help soften food residue that clogs the pores of the wood," said Instagram @qualitygreens.id.

Next, sprinkle salt on the surface of the wooden spatula. After that, rub it using lemon slices. Rubbing a wooden spatula with salt and lemon is an effective way to remove mold because both of these ingredients have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties. Salt is abrasive, so it can help remove dirt and mold residue that sticks to the surface of the wood.
In addition, salt also absorbs excess moisture in the wood, which is one of the main factors for mold growth. Meanwhile, lemon contains citric acid which is able to kill bacteria and mold, while also giving a fresh aroma to the wooden spatula. This combination works effectively to clean and prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms.

Well, after rubbing with salt and lemon, rinse immediately with running water. Then dry it by airing it or wiping it with tissue. Then, apply the surface of the wooden spatula using cooking oil evenly.
The use of oil aims to maintain the natural moisture of the wood so that it does not crack or dry easily. Wood that is exposed to water too often without protection tends to become brittle and easily broken, so oil helps maintain its elasticity and durability. Oil also forms a thin protective layer that prevents water from seeping too deeply into the pores of the wood, thus reducing the risk of future mold growth.
