When clothes often come into contact with rusty metal objects, such as hangers, buttons, or even clotheslines, rust stains are very likely to appear. These stains can appear without being noticed, ruining the appearance of clothes with reddish brown spots that are difficult to ignore. In addition to damaging the aesthetics, rust stains can also make clothes look dirty and unkempt, even though they have been washed regularly.
The main cause of rust stains is direct contact between fabric and oxidized metal, especially in humid conditions. When rusted metal comes into contact with fabric, the iron ions from the rust can be absorbed into the fabric fibers, leaving a stain that sticks tightly. This often happens to clothes that are stored or dried in humid places or that use low-quality metal accessories.
The problem faced when clothes are stained with rust is the difficulty in removing it. Unlike ordinary stains that can be removed with detergent, rust stains require special treatment because they tend to stick strongly to the fabric fibers. However, it should be noted that using the wrong cleaning agent can also risk damaging the fabric.
To be safer, you can use a trick shared by Facebook user Fitri Rahmawati in removing rust stains on clothes. Through one of the videos uploaded, she admitted to only using simple ingredients found in the kitchen. As reported by BrilioFood on Thursday (8/29), the kitchen ingredients in question are baking soda, vinegar, and dishwashing soap. Not only that, she also relies on toothpaste to remove stubborn rust stains on clothes.
