Brilio.net - Freezers have become one of the most important kitchen appliances in a household. With its ability to freeze food, freezers allow for long-term storage of food without losing much nutrition. From meat, vegetables, to ready-to-eat foods, all can be stored safely in frozen conditions, so that freshness and quality are maintained for months.
However, even though freezers offer many advantages, there are challenges that are often faced when processing frozen food. One of them is the process of thawing food which takes time. Frozen food must be thawed first before being processed, and this process can take several hours to overnight, depending on the type and size of the food.
This can certainly be an obstacle, especially when you need to prepare food in a short time. Instead, many people then thaw frozen food in various ways. For example, by soaking food in hot water and vinegar. This is considered to make food easier to thaw and can be cooked.
However, it should be noted that using hot water can also cook food and its texture will certainly change. To prevent this from happening, you can use the trick of thawing frozen food practiced by TikTok user @etryherlinda7. Through one of the videos uploaded, she admitted to only using one kitchen ingredient to thaw frozen food.
As reported by BrilioFood from TikTok @etryherlinda7 on Friday (27/9), the netizen initially claimed to want to defrost frozen shrimp. Well, the shrimp were really clumpy and very hard, so they had to be defrosted first. Instead of using hot water, the TikTok user relied on regular room temperature water and one kitchen ingredient, salt.
How to use it, put the shrimp or frozen food to be thawed in a bowl. Then sprinkle with a sufficient amount of table salt. After that, pour water until the entire surface of the shrimp is completely submerged.
Next, let it sit for about 5 minutes. Well, after letting it sit for 5 minutes, the shrimp that was originally clumped together will separate because it starts to melt. If it is like that, the shrimp can be washed clean and cooked immediately.
"This applies to fish or chicken too," said TikTok @etryherlinda7.
Basically, salt water has a lower freezing point than regular water. When frozen shrimp are immersed in salt water, the temperature around the shrimp is lower than if they were just immersed in regular water, but still above the freezing point of the salt water. This speeds up the thawing process because the shrimp that come into contact with the salt solution will not refreeze as they might in regular water.
Meanwhile, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) as reported by doh.wa.gov, thawing frozen seafood by soaking it in cold water is recommended as a safe and effective method, but it needs to be done with cold water and no more than two hours to prevent bacterial growth.
