Sad news came from the world of climbing, where Lilie Wijayati Poegiono died at Puncak Jaya, or better known as Carstensz Pyramid, located in the Jayawijaya Mountains, Papua. This information was conveyed by journalist Andreas Harsono, who was also Lilie's high school friend.

According to Andreas' upload on the X account @andreasharsono, Lilie is suspected of dying from hypothermia while climbing with her friend, Elsa Laksono. "Died from the cold at Puncak Carstensz, near Timika, Papua. Lilie is a fashion designer in Bandung, while Elsa is a dentist in Jakarta. They are alumni of SMA Dempo Malang in 1984," wrote Andreas, quoted by brilio.net on Sunday (2/3).

Regarding the chronology of the incident, Andreas explained that they initially used a helicopter and stopped at Lembah Kuning, but experienced cold. Of the total 10 climbers, five of them, including the deceased, suffered from hypothermia.

"In addition to Lilie Wijayati and Elsa Laksono, there were three other climbers who also suffered from hypothermia. Their health has improved, now they are just waiting for evacuation," added Andreas.

"Lilie died in the last sequence: Carstensz Peak, Papua. Lilie and Elsa joined the Carstensz Peak climbing group, which consisted of a total of 10 people, including one Russian and two Turkish citizens, with five guides. They took a helicopter to the Yellow Valley, and the rest of the journey was done on foot, but they experienced cold and Lilie died," he explained.

Some of the mountains she has climbed include Mount Merbabu, Mount Manglayang, Mount Slamet, Mount Burangrang, and Mount Kelud. Lilie is also active in rock climbing.

Before climbing Puncak Jaya, Lilie shared a video of her climbing preparation, including choosing the clothes she would wear. "H-4 heading to the Roof of Indonesia, Carstensz Pyramid. After months of physical and mental training, one of the important things to prepare is gear," she wrote.

He chose his gear very carefully, such as the first layer of the Omni-Heat Infinity Baselayer to maintain body temperature, and the outer layer of the Outdry Extreme Jacket which is waterproof. However, unfortunately, Lilie died while climbing with her best friend, Elsa Laksono. Both of them experienced hypothermia at Carstensz Peak. This news was confirmed by Lilie's high school friend, Andreas Harsono. "Lilie and Elsa, both 60 years old, died of cold at Carstensz Peak," he wrote on social media.

According to Andreas, their bodies were found in the Yellow Valley after using a helicopter. In addition to Lilie and Elsa, there were three other climbers who also suffered from hypothermia, but their health has improved.

Puncak Jaya or Carstensz Pyramid is the highest peak in Indonesia with an altitude of 4,883 meters above sea level. Located in Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, this peak is surrounded by glaciers that are increasingly thinning due to global warming. Puncak Jaya is one of the seven highest peaks in the world and is a challenge for climbers.
