What a yummy treat for you and the environment!

Brilio.net/en - No one needs another convincing statement as to how disastrous the effects of plastic wastes are. We are all could agree that plastics made from petroleum oil are not only wasteful in terms of resource but also create a lasting environmental damage to the ecosystem.

Much of that plastic waste comes from disposable plastic cutleries. They are practical to use but not so practical in a disposal. Not only made from a toxic and carcinogen chemical materials, plastic cutleries are often used just once before being thrown in the bin, and every year vast quantities of plastic knives, forks and spoons end up in a landfill where they release harmful substances into the soil as they decompose.

Seeing this situation, Baksey, a company based in Hyderabad launches an initiative to tackle this problem by creating an edible cutlery.

As the name suggest, the cutlery can be safely consumed after being used. Coming in many shapes from spoon, chopstick, spork and dessert spoon, the edible cutlery is made from a mix of jowar (sorghum), rice and wheat flour. The cutleries do not get soggy if placed in water and food. They only soften after some time (10-15 minutes), and thus can be eaten easily at the end of the meal. Dont feel like eating your spoon? You can also safely throw these edible cutleries as it is decomposable within five to six days and will serve as a fertilizer for the soil.

Narayana Peesapati, the founder and Managing Director ofBakeys Food Private Limited, said that the idea of making the cutlery came during a flight from Ahmedabad to Hyderabad, when he saw a passenger using a piece of Gujaratikhakraas a spoon to eat dessert.

Wenever I travelled, I used to feel terribly guilty about using plastic cutlery because it created so much plastic waste. Why couldnt we createan alternative? he said.

Bakeys, founded in Hyderabad in 2011, says its products are "highly nutritious," as it contains fiber, iron, protein, calcium, etc. Flavors can also be added as per consumers choice like-hot and spicy, onion and tomato, garlic, ginger, spicy or sweet.
