Brilio.net - Recently, Ruben Onsu's life has become a hot topic of discussion. There are not only oblique issues related to the condition of his household, but also his health condition which is not good.
Recently, social media was shocked by Ruben Onsu's statement regarding his health condition. Reported by brilio.net from the account @lambe_gosiip Ruben Onsu seemed outspoken with his friend, Irfan Hakim .
Irfan Hakim also revealed the illness suffered by Ruben Onsu. Apparently the 39 year old presenter suffers from a rare disease, namely Empty Sella Syndrome (ESS).
As a result of the Empty Sella disease he suffered from, Ruben Onsu had to undergo various therapies and treatments. So what is Empty Sella Syndrome?
Come on, let's get to know what ESS is and what causes Empty Sella disease, a rare condition that attacks part of Ruben Onsu's brain. The following is the complete review, as reported by brilio.net from various sources, Friday (17/5).
What is Empty Sella Syndrome?
Empty Sella Syndrome or what is known as empty sella syndrome is a rare disorder in the form of enlargement or malformation of the structure in the skull as the sella turcica. The sella turcica or sella turcica is a saddle-shaped depression located at the base of a person's skull (wedge bone).
The sella turcica is where the pituitary or pituitary gland functions to produce hormones and is where it controls the release of hormones from other glands. A person with empty sella syndrome has an abnormal sella turcica cavity at the base of the brain. This cavity usually contains the pituitary gland, which regulates the production of various important hormones.
In empty sella syndrome, there are two types, namely the sella turcica cavity is partially or completely filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The sella is partially empty, i.e. the pituitary gland is still present, but it is very small and may not function properly. Meanwhile, a completely empty sella means that the pituitary gland is not visible and is most likely not functioning.
When suffering from empty sella syndrome it can cause a variety of health problems, depending on how badly the pituitary gland is affected. In some cases of Empty Sella Syndrome, there are often no symptoms, but ESS sufferers may experience complaints, including:
- Erectile dysfunction
- Decreased sex drive
- Get tired easily
- Irregular menstruation or stopping altogether (amenorrhea)
- Galactorrhea, namely the discharge of breast milk or fluid resembling breast milk from the nipples even though you are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- Increased pressure in the brain
- Discharge of brain fluid from the nose
- Headache
- Papilledema, namely visual disturbances caused by the eye nerves swelling due to pressure in the brain
Empty Sella TreatmentFurthermore, the treatment of empty sella syndrome depends on the cause and severity. Treatment may include:
- Replacement hormone therapy, namely to replace hormones that are not produced by the pituitary gland.
- Surgery, to remove tumors or cysts that are pressing on the pituitary gland.
- Radiation, an attempt to shrink the tumor.
What causes Empty Sella Syndrome?
The causes of Empty Sella Syndrome (ESS) can be divided into two main categories:
1. Primary Empty Sella Syndrome:- Unknown cause (idiopathic)
So far, experts do not know for certain what is the main reason why someone can get ESS. However, there are the most common causes of primary ESS, and they occur in approximately 70-80% of cases. It is thought that idiopathic primary ESS is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
- Abnormalities in the structure of the sella turcica
The next cause is related to abnormalities that occur from birth (congenital) or develop after birth (acquired). This disorder can cause the pituitary gland to be pushed up or down, so that the sella turcica cavity is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
- High intracranial pressure
High intracranial pressure can cause the pituitary gland to shrink and flatten, so that the sella turcica cavity is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
2. Secondary Empty Sella Syndrome:- Head injury
Severe head injuries can cause damage to the pituitary gland or sella turcica, which can lead to secondary ESS.
- Brain tumor
Brain tumors located near the pituitary gland can compress the gland or disrupt blood flow to the gland, which can cause secondary ESS.
- Brain surgery
It is not uncommon for cases of secondary ESS to be caused by brain surgery involving the pituitary gland (sella turcica) so that it can cause damage to the gland or disrupt blood flow to the gland, which can trigger secondary ESS.
- Radiotherapy
Apart from that, radiotherapy to the head also poses a risk of damage to the pituitary gland/sella turcica. This is one of the causes of secondary Empty Sella Syndrome.
- Brain infection
Next, a severe brain infection can cause damage to the pituitary gland, triggering a person to suffer from this disease.
- Autoimmune disease
Finally, there are other causes, namely those related to autoimmune. This autoimmune disease often causes a person's immune system to attack healthy organs or body tissue. This causes inflammation and damage to the organs and tissues that are attacked.
