Oxford Dictionaries in their blog postannounced that the 2015 Word of the Year is an emoji. In an unprecedented move, the renowned dictionary company baffled everyone by naming a pictograph instead of an actual word.

On their blog, Oxford explained that the emojiwas chosen as the word that best reflected the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015.

For them, 2015 was the year that emojis and pictographs transcended conventional use and broke through mainstream, being utilized by almost everyone from all walks of life. They then exemplified the case by displaying tweets from prominent people that supports the use of emojis.
