No one predicted that Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and his deputy Djarot Saifulfriendship would steal a lot of attention in the midst of Ahok's blasphemy case and ruling.
The two were united in 2014 when Ahok's initial partner, Joko Widodo had to leave the Jakarta City Hall to be Indonesia's president. Djarot's name was then proposed by Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) to take the deputy position as Ahok stepped up as the governor. Djarot was relativelysilent compared to Ahok who was always on the spotlight with his loud remarks and action. The two worked together well andhave created a lot of breakthroughs for Jakarta, but nobody has thought that they are good friends outside of the workplace. Until Ahok's case broke.
Djarot was there to support Ahok who had to go through hard times, especially after the judges sentenced him to two years in prison on Tuesday. He suddenly becomes the messenger for Ahok's supporters, telling them to stay strong, and as he was appointed to be the acting governor, he promises that Ahok and his fight to take care of the capital will not end despite the governor is in jail.
