Lebaran is synonymous with a warm atmosphere, family togetherness, and of course various tempting dishes. But after being satisfied eating opor, rendang, ketupat, and cookies, you actually feel super sleepy and your body becomes weak? Be careful, you could be experiencing what is called a food coma.

Food coma, or medically known as postprandial somnolence, is a condition where you feel very sleepy and lethargic after eating a large meal. This phenomenon is common, especially after eating foods high in carbohydrates and fats. But don't worry, food coma can be avoided and overcome with a few simple steps.

What is a Food Coma?

Food coma occurs when your body focuses blood flow to your digestive tract to process food. As a result, blood flow to the brain is reduced, and extreme drowsiness occurs.

In addition, foods high in carbohydrates also trigger insulin spikes in the body. This insulin will increase the production of two important hormones related to sleep, namely serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin makes you feel calm, while melatonin triggers drowsiness. No wonder after eating a heavy meal, especially during Eid, you want to lie down right away.

Why Can Food Coma Be Disturbing?

Although not medically dangerous, food coma can disrupt your activities. Feeling weak and sleepy can reduce productivity, make you lazy to move, and even lose focus. If you have to work or socialize after eating, this is clearly uncomfortable.

Main Causes of Food Coma

1. Eating too much food

Overeating is the number one cause of food coma. Think of your body as a machine. If you force it to work hard to digest large amounts of food, the result will be fatigue.

The solution? Eat smaller portions more often. Don't wait until you're really hungry to eat a lot at once. It's better to eat enough and stop before you're really full.

2. Types of Food: Simple vs Complex Carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates such as white rice, lontong, and sweet cakes are quickly absorbed by the body and cause a spike in blood sugar. This can speed up the onset of drowsiness.

Try replacing them with complex carbohydrates like whole wheat bread, boiled potatoes, or brown rice. These carbohydrates are digested more slowly and keep your energy stable for longer.

In addition, limit the consumption of saturated fats and trans fats such as from fried foods and excessive coconut milk. Replace them with healthy fats from avocados, fish, or nuts.

3. Nerve Activity and Dehydration

After eating, your parasympathetic nervous system becomes more active. This nerve is responsible for relaxing your body, so you automatically feel sleepy. If you don't drink enough water, dehydration can make that tired feeling worse.

Tips: Don't forget to drink enough water throughout the day, especially after large meals.

How to Overcome Food Coma

If you already feel very sleepy after eating, don't worry. There are some easy ways to overcome it:

1. Eat Wisely

Choose a balanced diet that contains fiber, lean protein, and complex carbohydrates. Add fruits and vegetables to complement your menu. High-fiber foods can also slow down digestion, making you feel full longer but not weak.

2. Move Lightly After Eating

Don't lie down right away! Try walking slowly for about 10-15 minutes. This light activity can help improve blood circulation and reduce drowsiness.

3. Get enough sleep at night

If you have enough sleep the night before, the chances of you getting a food coma are smaller. Ideally, sleep 7-8 hours per night to keep your body fresh and strong for activities.

4. Maintain your diet and meal times

Try to eat at regular times. Avoid eating heavy meals too close to bedtime. If you eat too late, your body will work hard to digest food when it should be resting.

5. Consult a doctor if necessary

If you often experience food coma accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, dizziness, or indigestion, you should see a doctor. There may be other health conditions that need to be checked further.

Food coma can happen to anyone, especially during special moments like Eid which are full of delicious food. But you can still enjoy the food without having to be attacked by excessive drowsiness.

The key is in the right portion, healthy food choices, drinking enough, and staying active after eating. Don't forget to get enough rest so your body stays fit.

Enjoy a big meal without fear of feeling sleepy for a long time!
