And more often than not, when people travel overseas to visit Indonesia, they begin to fall in love with everything they see and hear. Here are six amazing types of art, music and performance that have caused visitors from all over the world to fall in love with Indonesian culture

1. Angklung

This traditional Indonesian musical instrument is celebrated throughout the world. Angklung may not be the only instrument made of bamboo, but its certainly becoming one of the most popular.

2. Batik

Batik is an express, bold form of art that involves drawing on fabric with wax. Its native to Indonesia, but its quickly earning fans from all over the world. One new batik lover is Zushima, a Japanese citizen who became enamored with the practice during an Indonesian community workshop in his native country. Through the lesson, he began to understand how to build batik motifs, and quickly became passionate about the art.

When interviewed at the International Culture Festival in Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, Zushima was enthusiastic. Batik is unique, it is not mere a fabric yet also an art.

3. Wayang

This Indonesian take on the traditional puppet show is one of the countrys most enjoyable performing arts. And its become so popular that wayang is also performed around the world. In Australia, its picked up some devoted fans, including Dyan, who discovered wayang during a workshop. He happily explained, I love watching wayang with unique characters. And hes certainly not the only one.

4. Pendet

This traditional dance originated in Bali, but its a big hit with Indonesian tourists, too. And sometimes they take what they learn home. Guangho, a Chinese exchange student, said, I often attend pendet course in my country. She explained that she started learning pendet in her native China at a sanggar, or studio. Now that shes abroad in the dances country of origin, we can only assume shell continue her lessons.

5. Pencak Silat

Music and dance arent the only pieces of Indonesian culture that foreign visitors fall in love with. Theyve also become taken with pencak silat, a martial art practice thats become popular with many visitors. Malasian student Zaid recently spoke enthusiastically about the sport. In my opinion, Pencak Silat is pretty difficult, but so cool.

6. Gamelan

This traditional Indonesian instrument combines metallophone, xylophone, drums and gongs. And like angklung, gamelan a big hit with tourists and visitors. In fact, its become so popular that people in countries as far away as Australia and the United States have began to learn how to play gamelan.

A Thai student, Beau, is one of many young gamelan students. He recently explained why he likes to play it. The sound of gamelan is very rhythmical, and we can choose its variety of types.

While these six pieces of Indonesian culture are fascinating, there are still many more aspects of the country to be explored. We cant wait to see what else this fascinating country has to offer.
