Brilio.net - For those of you who love seafood, you must be familiar with salted squid. As the name suggests, salted squid is squid that is preserved with dry salt so that it lasts a long time. Because of this pickling process, salted squid tastes saltier than ordinary squid.

Salted squid can be processed into various delicious and appetizing dishes. Like stir-fried, mixed with chili sauce, or just fried straight away. Because the salty taste dominates, you no longer need to add salt to the salted squid dish. Salted squid is suitable to be served as a side dish to accompany rice.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few people who don't want to process salted squid. Not without reason, the salty taste of squid dominates the processed product. Even though it has been washed many times, the salty taste in the squid has not diminished at all.

As a solution, you can boil salted squid first before cooking it with various spices. The boiling process is considered effective for dissolving the excess salt content in salted squid. Even though the salty taste is reduced, if the boiling process is too long, the texture of the salted squid will actually become tough when eaten.

To get around this, it turns out there are other ways that can be practiced to reduce saltiness in salted squid. The method was demonstrated by Instagram user @aaron_laksana. In his video upload, this chef appears to only rely on one kitchen spice to reduce the saltiness of salted squid. Curious about how?

An effective way to reduce saltiness in salted squid

Reported by BrilioFood from Instagram @aaron_laksana on Monday (8/4), take the salted squid one by one then remove the stomach. Set aside the bone part that is shaped like a toothpick. Once done, cut the salted squid into pieces according to your taste.

Put the salted squid pieces into a container. Instead of washing it with water, add one kitchen spice, namely salt, to it. As seen in the video upload, this chef used 2 teaspoons of salt and also added water to soak all parts of the salted squid.

"We are splashing in salt water, then we are leaving it for 15 minutes," explained the owner of the video.

After soaking for 15 minutes, the salted squid can be drained immediately. For maximum cleanliness, salted squid can be rinsed with running water and then drained and can be immediately cooked according to taste. Because it has been processed like this before, the excess saltiness in the salted squid disappears and nothing remains. This was revealed by this Chef.

"Guaranteed the squid will be neutral in saltiness, and no longer salty," he said.

How to store salted squid so it lasts a long time.

Here are several ways to store salted squid so that it remains durable and long-lasting.

1. Drying.

Drying is an effective traditional way to preserve salted squid. After the squid has been cleaned and cut as desired, you can dry it in direct sunlight or use artificial drying. Make sure the squid is completely dry before storing.

2. Salting.

Once the squid is drained, add enough salt to marinate it. Make sure the salt is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the squid. Salt helps inhibit the growth of bacteria that can cause damage.

3. Packaging.

Store salted squid in an airtight container or airtight plastic bag. Make sure the air inside the container or plastic bag is expelled well before sealing to prevent bacterial growth.

4. Storage in a cool and dry place.

Store salted squid in a cool, dry place such as a food storage cupboard or refrigerator. Avoid storing it in a damp place because moisture can accelerate damage.

5. Use of preservatives.

If you want to increase the shelf life of salted squid, you can use safe food preservatives, such as preservatives commonly used in the food industry. Make sure to follow the correct usage instructions.

6. Avoid direct light exposure.

Store salted squid in a place protected from direct light exposure. UV rays from the sun can accelerate damage to stored food.

By following the steps above, you can store salted squid properly so that it remains durable and long-lasting. Don't forget to check its condition periodically and throw away squid that is no longer suitable for consumption.
