From a simple means to conveniently communicate, the device have today become something most people rely on in carrying out their day-to-day activities. It has seen major transofrmations over the past decades, going from bulky to super slim and back to being just big enough to hold comfortably; from not having screen to a full-color display, to touchable screens.

Here we take a look at the most iconic phones, some of which may have also graced your pockets in the past.

1973 – The first mobile phone: Martin Cooper’s mobile phone

On April 3, 1973, Motorola’s senior engineer Martin Cooper called a person in a rival telecommunication company and said that he’s talking via a mobile phone. The device weighed 1.1 kilograms and measured 22.8cm x 12.7cm x 4.4cm. It allowed users to talk for 30 minutes and took 10 hours to charge.

1983 – The first commercial mobile phone: Motorola DynaTAC 8000X

This device allowed its 30 minutes of talking time and had a six-hour standby time. It also stored 30 phone numbers and cost $3,995.

1989 – Nokia’s first portable phone: Mobira Cityman 900

The phone weighed “only” 800 grams; a big improvement compared to its predecessors.

1992 – Ericsson EH 97 Sandra

Around this time, mobile phones have begun to shrink in size and is usually equipped with an antenna. Some of them came with screens, such as 1992’s primadonna Ericsson EH 97 Sandra.

1994 – Nokia 232

The usage of mobile phone gradually became popular, with more celebrities seen using these devices. The Nokia 232 was Alicia Silverstone's phone when playing Cher in drama-comedy Clueless. It was the the first mobile phone powered with data services, facsimile, and the SMS feature.
