Brilio.net/en - Back in the day, the becak or rickshaw was a common mode of transport in Indonesia. However, with a rapid surge in more advanced vehicles, the becak has now become a less popular means of transport. That being said, one man has brought becak - pedaling to a whole new level.
His name is Scott Thompson. Born in Scotland, Scott has now lived in Jakarta for about 12 years. On October 17, 2015, Scott broke the world record for pedaling his modified becak, named Flying Merah Putih, from Banda Aceh all the way back to Jakarta in only three weeks. During several spots of the journey, he had briefly encountered the hazardous haze but he didnt let that or any other obstacle drag him down. In short, he was unstoppable!
Scotts unforgettable pedaling experience covered just over 2600KM, making him part of a special bunch of heroes in the Guinness Book of World Records!

Scott may be known as the man behind the becak, but there is much more to him than that. Just like previous events he has been a part of, he did this one for a charitable cause. According to his website, Scott launched BecakTerus as a pet project in September 2015, in which he raised funds to four main non-profit organizations: Yayasan Anak Cinta Bangsa (YACB), Marys Cancer Kiddies, Yayasan Puspita and Yayasan Wisma Cheshire Indonesia.
Ultimately, he aims to improve the well-being of disadvantaged children by providing education to them and overcoming challenges such as cancer and mobility disabilities. Through his initiatives, Scott aims to build public awareness towards the visions and missions of those foundations.

With philanthropic efforts dating back to 2010, Scotts fundraising events also included a 3-day ultra-marathon through the Sahara Desert and a 4-week run from Bali to Jakarta! Along with the funds he raised through the BecakTerus initiave, Scott has accumulated close to a whooping USD$500,000- and he doesnt intend to stop just yet!
Check out the latest fundraising figures on his website: www.becakterus.com, where you can also learn more about Scotts other projects. While youre at it, dont forget to be a part of his future journeys - hes got a GPS device for you to track his every path. Finally, spread the word and keep the dream alive!
