Brilio.net/en - As 2016 starts, so do the new hair trends. While 2015 may have seen the rise (and possible demise) of the equally hated and loved manbun, 2016 has seen the beginnings of a new trend to match the thick and luscious beards of hipster men far and wide.

Behold, the manbraid.

Men braiding isnt necessarily a new trend Native Americans have been wearing braids centuries before Instagram made it cool. Willie Nelson rocked the braids while he was rocking on stage. And style daredevil Jared Leto sparked the trend.

While social media may have a field day on these men, who are we to criticize the creativity that Millennials are experimenting with? After all, girls have been dying their hair every color of the rainbow in the name of fashion, so why shouldnt boys be allowed to have a little fun? If men want to experiment with hairstyles typically associated with Heidi from the Alps, 2016 is the year to do so. As gender lines become more malleable, the possibilities become endless.

Some critics on Buzzfeed have pointed out that men of color have been braiding their hair into cornrows way before white hipsters from Brooklyn took it upon themselves to do so. Braids were etched into the back of the head of the majestic sphinx, noted J.C. Peters in her research novel Braids, cornrows, dreadlocks and hair wraps: An African continuum. While this is undoubtedly true, the trend has taken a more modern spin. Common looks for hair braiding aficionados include French braids, side braids, braiding just a small details on the side of their manbuns, and even the pro-level braid crown.

To all those wishing to experiment and change their look, we say go for it! Youve nothing to lose but some precious time. And who knows, it might just look more masculine than you thought.

Except for Donald Trump. He should stick to his comb-over.
