Brilio.net - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned of the potential for a megathrust earthquake in Indonesia. Analysis of seismic gap zones in several regions, including the Sunda Strait and Mentawai-Siberut, is the basis for this prediction. Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, emphasized that a megathrust earthquake in Indonesia is just a matter of time before it occurs.
"'Seismic Gap' Megathrust Sunda Strait (M8.7) and Megathrust Mentawai-Siberut (M8.9). The release of earthquakes in these two megathrust segments can be said to be 'just a matter of time' because the two regions have not had a major earthquake for hundreds of years," said Daryono on Monday, August 12, 2024.
The potential for a megathrust earthquake in Indonesia is considered similar to the case that occurred in Japan. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Japan on August 8, 2024, was a warning for Indonesia. Although the time of occurrence cannot be predicted with certainty, BMKG emphasized the importance of vigilance and preparation for this disaster.

The main cause of megathrust earthquakes in Indonesia is tectonic activity in subduction zones. Oceanic plates that dive beneath continental plates accumulate energy over a long period of time. This energy is then suddenly released in the form of a large earthquake.
The impact of a megathrust earthquake in Indonesia can be very destructive, including the potential for a tsunami that threatens coastal areas. BMKG continues to carry out mitigation efforts and educate the public to increase preparedness. The tsunami early warning system (InaTEWS) is also being improved to provide faster and more accurate warnings.
Given the magnitude of the potential for disaster, people need to prepare a disaster preparedness bag. This bag contains important items needed when evacuating for at least 3 days.

Here are 11 essential items that need to be carried in a disaster preparedness bag, compiled by brilio.net from various sources on Wednesday (14/8).
1. Important letters.Documents such as land certificates, diplomas, vehicle registration, and birth certificates should be kept in an emergency bag. Store them in a waterproof plastic envelope to protect them from damage. Photocopy or scan these documents as backup.
2. Clothes for 3 days.Provide complete clothing including underwear, shirt, pants, and jacket. Choose clothes that are comfortable and dry easily. Also include a thin blanket and a small towel.
3. Long-lasting food.Prepare durable and highly nutritious foods such as biscuits, shredded meat, and energy bars. Choose foods that do not require heating or special preparation. Also include some instant coffee or tea sachets.
4. Bottled drinking water.Bring enough bottled water for 3 days. Choose a medium-sized bottle for easy carrying. Also include water purification tablets as a backup.
5. First aid kit and personal medication.Prepare a first aid kit containing basic medicines such as bandages, antiseptics, and painkillers. Don't forget to include personal medicines that are routinely consumed. Note the dosage and rules for using the medicine.

8. Cash.Keep some cash in small denominations. Also prepare ATM cards and credit cards as backups. Store money in several different places to reduce the risk of loss.
9. Whistle.Carry a loud whistle to call for help when trapped. Hang it somewhere easy to reach such as on your bag or clothing. Learn the basic codes of whistle communication.
10. Mask.Provide N95 masks to protect against dust and smoke. Bring several spare masks in sealed packages. Learn how to use the mask properly for maximum protection.

Prepare this emergency bag well in advance and store it in an easily accessible place. Check and update its contents regularly, especially for food and medicine. Socialize the location and contents of the emergency bag to all family members. With thorough preparation, we can increase our chances of survival when facing an emergency situation.
