Brilio.net - Pempek is known as a food with a crispy outer texture and a soft inside. To get this crispy texture, most people will fry it in hot oil. In addition to making it crispy, the frying process also makes the pempek taste more appetizing.

Generally, frying pempek is done in a frying pan heated on the stove. The stove fire can indeed make the oil as hot as possible. However, not a few people actually use other tools like TikTok user @rahmaarasy.

Instead of using a stove, this woman named Rahma uses a rice cooker. In the 43-second video, she initially shows the rice cooker in a closed state. A moment later, she immediately opens the rice cooker.

When opened, it turned out that the inside of the rice cooker contained hot oil and pempek. Rahma admitted that she chose to fry pempek in a rice cooker because the gas in her house was running out. Therefore, she took the initiative to use a rice cooker because this one tool can produce hot temperatures that can cook food.

"Fried in a rice cooker? This is an alternative if you run out of gas at night hahahaha," wrote Rahma as reported by BrilioFood from TikTok @rahmaarasy on Sunday (13/10).

Furthermore, Rahma immediately shared a tutorial on using a rice cooker to fry this pempek. So, just pour oil into the rice cooker pan or inner pot. Then place the pempek in the rice cooker and press the 'cook' button. If the button goes up and changes to warm, press it again for a longer duration.

"And he's not going back (up the button)," he explained further.

Who would have thought, fried pempek looks really crispy. According to Rahma, the inside of the pempek is also perfectly cooked. The texture is just as crispy as when fried normally using a frying pan on the stove.

Rahma's action of frying pempek in a rice cooker immediately attracted the attention of netizens. Among the more than 32 thousand viewers, there were several other TikTok users who gave direct responses in the comments column. Some of these netizens actually admitted to being worried about the action.

"Is it safe, sis?" asked the TikTok account @.hm304.

"It can't be damaged and sticky even though there's a lot of oil," said the TikTok account @betta_depok_premium.

Basically, frying food using a rice cooker can have several negative impacts on both the appliance and your health. According to ricecookeradvice.com, rice cookers are not designed to reach the high temperatures required for frying, which can cause food to cook unevenly and potentially be unsafe for consumption. The components of the rice cooker are also unable to withstand high heat for long periods of time, increasing the risk of damage or even a fire hazard if left unattended.

Additionally, many rice cookers have non-stick coatings, such as Teflon, which can release harmful fumes when heated above safe temperatures (around 500F or 260C). According to thebeijinger.com, these fumes can be toxic and pose a health risk. Furthermore, repeated use at high temperatures can damage the non-stick coating, potentially leading to ingestion of toxic particles.
