Brilio.net/en - Who doesnt know Beringharjo? It is a popular market which is pretty famous for its batik and indeed, has always become a shopping destination for tourists visiting Jogja. However, if you explore more about this place, you would discover another side of this market.
Located in a small alley on the north side of the market, there are several stalls selling old stuff. These stalls sell antique and vintage curios that are quite rare today.
According to one of the sellers, these stalls have been established since the 1960s. At first there were only two stalls, but later multiplied before filling this narrow alley. The type of goods sold in each stall also varies. There is a stall which sells old money, bells, old stamps, old-fashioned irons and keys, and also household furniture such as pans, spoons, forks.
The old money appears to be the most frequently encountered stuff there. The money comes from various eras, starting from the Majapahit era, Dutch era, up to the New Order era.
The type of old money sold here consists of two types, namely coins and banknotes. For the coin itself, it is still divided into several shapes and sizes: there are large, small, regular, spherical, and perforated. While for the banknotes, it is available in various nominal values, starting from one Rupiah, one penny, to larger values.
Most customers are money collectors or just foreign tourists who are curious about this stuff, said Sumarni, one of the stall owners to brilio.net, Thursday (13/8).
She claimed that she obtained all the memorabilia from Chinese who come from Magelang or Surabaya. The price of the goods is also varied, ranging from IDR 1,000 to millions of rupiah depending on the antiquity level.
In addition, tape sellers could also be found in this alley. Unfortunately, they are less popular compared to other antique and vintage sellers which are indeed frequented by collectors. If youre a vintage music lover, you can also get old school cassette tapes here for only IDR 5.000.
