British Actor Sir Roger Moore, best known for his role as James Bond, has died from cancer at the age of 89 in Switzerland on Tuesday.

The star lost a battle with cancer, according to a family statment posted on the actor's official Twitter account.

Moore came in the role of the iconic British spy to replace George Lazenby. Moore played in several Bond classics such as 'The Man with Golden Gun' and 'Moonraker'. With all seven franchise he played between 1973 and 1985, Moore's character became synoymous with more humorous Bond – compared to Sean Connery and Lazenby's version – popular for his bright one liners .

Beyond Bond, he was remembered for his role as Simon Templar in the 1970's TV hit 'The Saint' and Beau Maverick in season two of 'Maverick'.

Sleep well, Mr. Bond.
