Portugal tried to run only on renewable energy and it worked!

This time, the overall usage of the country out reached 100% and last for 4 days. Celia Tholozan

Brilio.net/en - A few weeks ago, Portugal was the first country in the world to run for four days only thanks to renewable energies. Even if it only concerned the electrical consumption, the successful attempt is very inspiring for other countries and simply proves that it actually is possible.

The country is one of the most advanced when it comes to green energies. In the first semester of 2013, 70% of the electrical consumption of the country came from renewables energies. And during the year 2014, the country reach 63% over the entire year. This time, the overall usage of the country out reached 100% and last for 4 days.

Even if the Government is at the core of using those energies, the reason why the country was successfully able to realise the attempt last month was actually the favourable meteorological conditions. The heavy rain and wind were at the root of it.

The windmills and hydroelectric powers are highly developed in the country, even if it is actually not always of a great help in some difficult conditions, such as the great drought that occurred last summer for example. During that period, the renewable energies only provided 50% of the electricity, compared to more than 65% of the previous. It is thus very unpredictable but the country is aiming to produce more, and in case of excess production, to use it for profit.

The Iberian Peninsula is very well suited for wind farms and therefore the country has high hopes for a new industry: exporting renewable power to the rest of Europe. According to Oliver Joy, spokesman for an industry association: this will require an increased build-out of interconnectors, a reformed electricity market and political will [] but with the right policies in place, wind could meet a quarter of Europes power needs in the next 15 years.
