Brilio.net - Shocked beyond words, a woman found a thesis in the Palembang Muhammadiyah University repository that was very similar to hers. Because of that, he immediately shared it via social media X on the account @wahkerensih. It is known that this woman named Naomi is a graduate of Sriwijaya University.
It is known that her thesis has been published since 2021. Meanwhile, a student at the UM Palembang Faculty of Law who was suspected of plagiarizing most of her work was published in March 2024. Naomi then did not accept this finding.
"Ba** my bachelor's thesis was plagiarized by law students at Muhammadiyah University in Palembang. Hadeh," he wrote.
Naomi believes that the UM Palembang student's thesis plagiarized her work through similar research backgrounds. It can be seen in the image shared that the sentence arrangement and word choice are very similar in the 2 paragraphs. In fact, similarities are also found on other parts of the page.
Not only that, plagiarists don't even have their own creative direction. Naomi said that the footnotes and the highlighting of the quotations made no difference at all. He thought that this was a brave act. It's really despicable in the academic realm.
"You really had the courage, sis, to be accused of plagiarizing my thesis. I fought against it with hard work. My mother was sick with cancer at the time. I went back and forth to my lecturer's house from the hospital for guidance. If you don't have the heart, at least have manners and brain," he said.
Naomi also shared evidence of consultation regarding the thesis idea in 2020. She has gone through many struggles. It is true that she cannot just let go of this plagiarism case.
As a quick step, he contacted and consulted with the Deputy Dean of Sriwijaya University. The result of this entrustment is that Naomi will try to send a summons to the university concerned. Naomi's supervisor when working on her thesis also really regretted this case.
Response from the party suspected of plagiarism
Because it went viral on social media, the owner of the thesis who was suspected of plagiarizing immediately contacted Naomi. He clarified that he did not plagiarize at all. The similarities occur because the person concerned also uses the same theory as Naomi.
"I'm sorry sis, it's not plagiarism but it's the theory of the final thesis assignment. There are possibilities but not all of them because it's theory. And our discussion is different," he wrote.
However, Naomi could not accept this defense. Because after checking the plagiarism, it was 58%. This is quite a high number for a scientific work.
Naomi found indications that this person used cunning methods to plagiarize her work. In order to pass Turnitin, it appears that many letters have been replaced with certain symbols in the bibliography. Because of that he was increasingly unable to accept this.
Finally, Naomi sent a summons to UM Palembang. He also threatened that if within 30 days the campus concerned did not respond, Naomi would take further legal action.
Response from Muhammadiyah University of Palembang.
Responding to this, Muhammadiyah University of Palembang immediately responded. This was conveyed by Abdul Hamid Usman, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Muhammadiyah University, Palembang.
In his statement, Abdul Hamid will follow up on the report and form an investigation team as a form of resolution effort. He also said he was ready to give strict sanctions to the students concerned, especially if they were proven to have committed plagiarism.
"Firstly, UM Palembang will immediately follow up on these findings, secondly, FH UM Palembamg will immediately form an investigation team. Thirdly, if it is proven that there has been an academic violation, then FH UM Palembamg will give strict sanctions to the students concerned," he said, quoted from Instagram @ umpalembang on Thursday (30/5).
