It's sad that teachers have to teach outside of working hours, many junior high school students can't read

This teacher questioned the school's decision to graduate students even though they could not read. Muhammad Rizki Yusrial

Brilio.net - Middle school students should already have good reading skills. This is a basic skill that is very important to support learning in all subjects. The ability to read allows students to understand material, follow teacher instructions, and do assignments more effectively.

However, the conditions at this junior high school are different. They have just accepted new students. But unfortunately, many students cannot read. The story can be seen in the TikTok video posted by the account @sarah_2293.

A woman named Sarah who is also a teacher gave her story on TikTok. He said that Indonesia is currently not doing well. The reason is, even though they are in junior high school, many students cannot read or even memorize the letters.

"Indonesia is not doing well. Many junior high school students can't read and don't know the letters of the alphabet," he wrote, quoted by brilio.net , Thursday (1/8).

Apart from being a problem for the next generation, this will also increase work for junior high school teachers. Sarah said that she had the task of teaching students to read. This adds to his work because he uses time outside of teaching hours.

"Finally, junior high school teachers received additional duties outside of teaching hours, having to teach students to read," wrote the account @sarah_2293.

This then made Sarah question the role of parents at home. For him, every parent must monitor their child's development. Moreover, lessons in junior high school are no longer at the level of teaching or memorizing the letters A to Z.

"Please parents of students must be sensitive to their own children, junior high school lessons are already quite advanced when you have to teach your children the letters AZ," continued Sarah.

Apart from that, he also blamed the students' teachers at the elementary school. He suspected that the students' elementary school teachers did not seem to teach letters at all. He also questioned the school's decision to graduate the student even though he could not read.

"Primary school teachers can also teach them letters. How can you finish elementary school without knowing letters and not being able to read," he added.

Sarah admitted that she actually didn't mind if only 1 to 2 students couldn't read. However, at the junior high school where she taught, Sarah found 30 students who could not read. This certainly makes it difficult for him and other teachers to solve this problem.

However, he couldn't do much other than be enthusiastic as a teacher. Sarah and her colleagues have to fight hard every day so that these students can read.

"Hopefully the enthusiasm of the junior high school teachers who struggle hard every day to teach children to read in the hall will be rewarded many times over. Amen," he concluded.

Sarah's story then went viral and attracted the attention of netizens. Apparently, many people say that this doesn't just happen in junior high school. Until high school and college, there are quite a few students who don't know any letters at all. This proves the serious problems that occur in Indonesian education .

"I also once had a student who couldn't read, he could only write his name. When taking an exam, he just re-wrote the questions. He found out when he was preparing his thesis and ended up being DO'd," said the account @azkha.

"For this academic year, my school has 4 students who are not yet at junior high school level. Their reading skills are still at the spelling stage," explained the account @galang_bulan.

"I used to be a junior high school teacher, who always thought to myself, "how do these elementary school teachers teach this", after becoming an elementary school teacher, I realized that it wasn't the teacher, but the parents' awareness," wrote the account @mimozza

"Never mind middle school, even as a high school teacher, I often come across students who can't read," commented the account @issitaViloinYoura.
