In Brief: Indonesia Potentially Criminalizing Gay Sex

A conservative group wants a big change to the law covering sexual relationships. Ivana Lucic

Brilio.net/en - A major conservative group ispressuringthe Indonesian government and asking for a revision of the laws regarding sex, including sex outside marriage and gay sex.

Essentially, the conservative and highly religious group Aliansa Cinta Keluarga or The Family Love Alliance, represented by lawyer Fiezal Syahmenan, wants to make adultery and gay sex illegal.

These laws were created by the Dutch colonial government which are not based on Indonesian values, or Indonesias constitution, said Fiezal. The lawyer continued to say that members of the LGBTIQ community are not living according toIndonesian values, presenting the caseas a call to nationalism rather than anti-LGBTIQ.

The point is that LGBT is not in line with the values in the foundation of this country, that is the problem," said Fiezal.

Its been a tough year for the LGBTIQ minority group in Indonesia, with transgender schools shutting down in Yogyakarta and officialsspeaking of the"moral corruption" of gay and trans university students. This case could set a serious precedent for the future of LGBTIQ rights in the country.
