House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Fahri Hamzah recently said that semi-state institutions, including commissions for anti-graft (KPK) and human rights (Komnas HAM) are no longer needed by the people.

He also wanted the government to immediately dissolve the institutions.

"Semi-state institutions, including Komnas HAM as well as KPK, in my opinion, are actually unnecessary," said Fahri at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Monday.

Fahri stressed that the country has undergone a consolidation of democracy and institutions improvement, making the commissions' job would be irrelevant in the near future.

For example, Fahri believed that there would be no violation of human right in the future, thus Komnas HAM will be an irrelevant institution. In addition, he claimed the institution's task and duty have already been covered by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.

Similarly, for KPK, according to Fahri, the responsibility of corruption eradication should be in the president's hand, not in the institution.

Fahri assessed that currently those semi-state institutions have been 'used' by certain people as a political tool.

"So let's consolidate this country by strengthening the core institutions [and] reducing the semi-state institutions because they cause disorders. Sometimes, an excessive dualism, and we [government] got a limited budget," said Fahri.

"What's the use for us? Waste of money, that counts for Komnas HAM [and] KPK whose functions' are within the scope of the government. In the past [core institutions] were considered ineffective, [now] they're deemed necessary. So, if their functions have been covered by the government, then why? Just disband them," said the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician.
