Brilio.net - A hoarse voice or hoarse throat in the morning is a symptom that is quite common in everyone and is often ignored. However, knowing the cause can help you understand why this happens and how you can overcome it. Such as paying attention to your sleeping position, drinking more water to help avoid dehydration while sleeping, and cleaning your respiratory tract before sleeping by gargling with salt or nasal spray to clear mucus which generally causes hoarseness in the throat.

But what happens if the cause of the hoarse voice is not because we don't know how to deal with it, but because of a terrible animal that lives in the throat without realizing it. As experienced by a man whose story is heartbreaking below.

The man began to experience discomfort in his throat and spoke hoarsely when he woke up and when doing daily activities. At first he didn't think there was something dangerous in his throat. However, when he went to the doctor, he discovered something unexpected. The hoarse voice was apparently caused by a 6 cm long leech sucking blood from his throat.

At first this man only assumed that this was a normal thing to happen when he just woke up, but this assumption began to make him doubt until these symptoms were added to him spitting blood. It was at that moment that he realized that things were worse than they seemed. Initially, he tried to identify the cause himself, by opening his mouth and looking in the mirror, but he couldn't see anything odd other than what looked like a brown lump at the top of his throat.

This 53 year old man from Vietnam panicked and immediately sought medical help. His decision to look in the mirror helped him find out that there was a leech stuck in his throat. When the man arrived at the National Endocrinology Hospital in Hanoi complaining of discomfort in his throat and occasional spitting of blood, doctors performed an endoscopy and showed a 6 cm long leech stuck firmly in his throat, right near his trachea.

Even though a discovery like this is possible, it still feels quite strange. This case previously occurred in a Vietnamese man in 2019. Leeches usually manage to enter the human body due to lack of hygiene. In this case, the 53-year-old patient told the doctor that he had injured his hand while holding a mousetrap about a month earlier.

As a firm believer in herbal medicine, he treated the wound with medicinal herbs placed in his mouth, and chewed them until they became a paste to rub on the wound. This is what made doctors at the National Endocrinology Hospital believe that the leech came from the leaves of the medicinal plant he was chewing. When it enters the mouth, the leech may be small, but because it continuously feeds on the blood in the man's throat, the leech eventually grows to a size of 6 cm.

To avoid this kind of thing, you should maintain cleanliness, such as avoiding contaminated water sources and dirty leaves when in the wild. Because we don't know about the existence of leeches that have small bodies. According to Jeremy Joslin, an Emergency Room doctor at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, United States, leeches do not have an immune system that sterilizes their stomachs like humans. So, if leeches carry bacteria and stick to the body, the bacteria can spread through wounds on the human body.
