On Monday, April 7, 2025, the world lost a very influential figure, Murdaya Widyawimarta, better known as Murdaya Poo. He passed away at 13:57 Singapore time due to complications from cancer that he had suffered from for two years. Murdaya Poo was not only a successful businessman, but also a former politician who was widely known by the public.
His passing has left his family, friends and everyone who knew him in a deep sorrow. In an official statement from the family, they expressed their gratitude for the support and love given by everyone during this difficult time. "Our family is very grateful for the love and support from friends, family and the medical team who have accompanied him during his battle with cancer over the past two years," they said.
The funeral procession is planned to be held at Woodlands Memorial, Singapore. The sad news was also conveyed by Tjhai Chui Mie, Mayor of Singkawang, through his social media, where he expressed his deepest condolences for the passing of Murdaya Poo.
Murdaya Poo was born on January 12, 1946 in Blitar, Indonesia. He started his career as a newspaper seller before entering the construction business in 1972. In 1992, he founded Central Cipta Murdaya (CCM), which is now a large conglomerate in various sectors, including engineering and property development. One of his famous projects is the Jakarta International Expo, which is one of the largest convention centers in Jakarta.
According to Forbes, Murdaya Poo's wealth reached USD 1.2 billion as of April 7, 2025, making him one of the richest people in Indonesia. He also owns shares in Metropolitan Kentjana Tbk, a property developer that manages Pondok Indah Mall and several housing complexes in Jakarta.
Outside of business, Murdaya Poo is also active in politics. He joined the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) in 1998 and was elected as a member of the People's Representative Council (DPR) from Jakarta for the period 2004 to 2009. In his personal life, he is married to Siti Hartati Murdaya and has four children. Murdaya is known as a vegetarian and a golf enthusiast.
