Erick Thohir , Chairman of PSSI, recently revealed that the relationship between himself and Shin Tae-yong, former coach of the Indonesian National Team, is not in the best condition. Even so, Erick considers this normal and hopes to meet again sometime.
Erick's decision to dismiss Shin Tae-yong from his position surprised many, especially after he extended the South Korean coach's contract just six months earlier. The contract extension, which was carried out in 2023, was seen as a form of trust from Erick to Shin.
However, Erick explained that there were several factors that influenced this decision, including leadership dynamics, language issues, and strategies that were considered important for the future of the Indonesian National Team. He emphasized that this decision was taken for the good of the national team in the future.
"Okay. It must be uncomfortable for both of us. It's human nature. We'll meet again later," said Erick in an interview on the Liputan6 YouTube channel.
Erick also discussed his relationship with Roberto Mancini, which was strained during his time as owner of Inter Milan. Despite firing Mancini in 2016, their relationship has since improved over time.
"I also felt bad for Mancini. Then we met again there. Hello. Later there will also be a time to meet Shin Tae-yong," said Erick.
He added that although his relationship with Mancini is now good, the previous breakup had made him feel uncomfortable. "With Mancini it was also good, then the separation was uncomfortable. That's normal," Erick added.
Erick emphasized that when he met Shin, he would greet him and show his attention. "Be good. Greetings to the family. How is your career," he said, reflecting a professional and friendly attitude.
Erick also emphasized that the world of football is small and there is no need to be too dramatic in professional relationships. "Relationships are normal and professional. We are good at times, good. I am also professional. I extended his contract. When the time comes, the risks are over," he explained.
Furthermore, Erick reminded that nothing is eternal in Indonesian football, including the position of PSSI Chairman and National Team coach.
"Is there anyone who has a lifetime in Indonesian football? The PSSI Chairman has a limit of three terms. The Indonesian National Team Coach has a limit. The ones who are a bit longer are players, players can be 15 years if they start from U-17 and finish at the age of 32-35 years. It can be longer than the PSSI Chairman and the national team coach," he concluded.
