Siomai, a typical Indonesian dish, has managed to rank second in the list of the 100 most delicious dumplings in the world according to TasteAtlas which was released on December 10, 2024. In this annual list, TasteAtlas, a platform that reviews traditional food, presents the 100 most delicious foods by category.
Siomai, which scored 4.7 out of 5, was second only to Japan's gyoza, which came in first with a score of 4.8. According to TasteAtlas, siomai is a dish consisting of steamed cone-shaped fish dumplings, eggs, potatoes, cabbage, tofu, and bitter melon. After being steamed, all the ingredients are arranged on a plate, cut into bite-sized pieces, and drizzled with a spicy peanut sauce.
To add flavor, siomai is usually served with sweet soy sauce, chili sauce, and a little lime juice. The origin of siomai itself comes from Chinese siomai brought by Chinese immigrants to Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period. Interestingly, siomai shares the 2nd position with guotie, fried dumplings from China.
Guotie, known as fried dumplings, are usually filled with minced pork and vegetables. The unique cooking method gives guotie a crispy texture on the bottom and soft on the top. The dumplings should always be long and straight so they can stand up well when cooked.

Hamamatsu gyoza, which ranks first, is famous for its cabbage, onion and pork filling and unique frying technique. Meanwhile, jiaozi, a Chinese dumpling filled with meat or vegetables, is also very popular in East Asia.
Overall, Indonesian cuisine continues to shine on the international stage, ranking 7th in the list of the 100 most delicious foods in the world. Although down one place from the previous year, Indonesia remains the champion in Asia, ahead of countries such as Japan and China.
