President Joko Widodo announced his plan for traditional markets during an inauguration event of Sambi Market in Boyolali, Central Java today.

“We are rebuilding markets from Sabang to Merauke, [and] our target is to build 5,000 markets in 5 years," he said.

Jokowi claimed the big target is to increase the people's welfare.

"I know that 5,000 is a big number, but that's the target (we've set)," he said. "If we don't (set any target), traditional markets will lost to modern markets, malls, supermarkets and hypermarkets. I don't want it to be like that."

The revitalization ambi Market is part of the government's program to boost people's economy in the region.

“I am so excited to open Sambi Market this morning,” the president said. "Now we have parking area, so those using motorbikes or cars can park there. It is more comfortable now. After this (opening) we have to maintain (the condition), its cleanliness so more buyers would come."

President Jokowi opened the market accompanied by Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, State Secretary Pratikno, and Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo.
