Fact #1: The cholesterol in goat meat is lower than in chicken or beef.

Every 100 grams of goat meat contains around 109 calories, which is lower than the calories in beef (250 Cal) and chicken (195 Cal). The cholesterol contains in goat meat is also lower which is 57 mg per 100 grams while beef has 89 mg and chicken has 83 mg each portion.

In total, 100 grams of goat meat only contains 2.3 grams of total fat while in beef it can reach 15 grams and 7.5 grams in chicken. It means one portion of goat meat only meets 4 percent of your daily fat needs based on the calculation of 2,000 calories per day.

Fact #2: Its not true that consuming goat meat causes hypertension.

Red meat is not supposed to be consumed too much since it has quite high saturated fat content which can increase cholesterol and trigger heart disease. Therefore, saturated fat intake from food shall not be more than 20 grams every day.

Generally, there is 6 grams of saturated fat in beef and 2,5 grams in chicken each portion. Meanwhile, saturated fat in goat meat is only around 0.71 grams per 100 grams weight of the meat.

Goat meat is even rich of unsaturated fat, which is around 1 gram per portion, compared to beef or chicken. Unsaturated fat is the kind of good fat that helpsbalance blood cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation in the body and stabilize the heartbeats.

Then, where does the myth of goat meat causing hypertension come from?

Consuming goat meat does not cause hypertension. However, there are some factors which indirectly increase the blood pressure.

High blood pressure thathappens after consuming goat meat is mostly caused by wrong cooking technique.

In Indonesia, goat meat is often being fried before being processed further or grilled and for satay and kambing guling (roasted goat). Frying, grilling or roasting goat meat increases the calories in food. Moreover, this cooking technique mostly require cooking oil, butter or margarine which later turns into fat and being absorbed by the meat.

The heat fromfrying or grilling causes the water content in the food evaporates and replaced by fat coming from the oil. The oil absorbed bythe meat then causes the food havehigh calorie. The increase of the calorie amount can even reach 64 percent. The high calorie intake in the body will be changed into fat which time by time can accumulate in the blood vessels and increase the blood pressure.

Besides, the use of various ingredients while cooking might also lead to high blood pressure after consuming goat meat. Consuming ketchup, salt, glutamate containing high sodium and preservatives might cause high blood pressure.

Adding coconut milk can also affect it since its saturated fat level is quite high.

However, limit your red meat intake!

Consuming goat meat is not the main reason of your high blood pressure. Therefore, it is still okay to consume it.

However, you should limit the portion since whatever meat you eat, if it is high in fat and consumed excessively then it will increase the blood pressure from the accumulation of saturated fat in the body.

Moreover, the risk of increased blood pressure due to the ingredients used to cook might increase to those who already have high cholesterol.

As long as you are wise in controlling your intake, consuming meat wont make you get high blood pressure or cholesterol.

Be smart in choosing the meat and cooking it.

You can throw away the fat when you are cooking and use healthier cooking oil to stay healthy.
