Brilio.net/en - Becoming a global star is the dream of many Asian celebrities and in the digital age its one thats increasingly possible to achieve.
Take Cinta Laura Kiehl. The daughter of Michael and Herdiana Kiehl is already a star in Indonesia but a major role on the international circuit has eluded her, until now.
Cintas landed a main supporting role as Nicole in thriller The Ninth Passenger, which starts filming this month. Its not a lead role, but winning the opportunity to work closely with a movie studio like Lionsgate and an experienced Hollywood.
Her Indonesian fame definitely would have helped though! Cintas STARmeter rating on IMDB ranks her above Jesse Metcalfe, who is playing the lead.
So how did she do it?
1. Cinta has excellent English language skills
Speaking English is a crucial asset for any star who wants to go global. Cinta is fluent and speaks with only a trace of an accent. Many Asian stars have struggled to shake off their native accents and with a few exceptions like Jackie Chan, whose martial arts skills made him a star, this is a major obstacle to winning over casting directors
Plus, a slightly foreign twang is getting more and more popular in Hollywood
2. The face!
Cinta has an Indonesian mother and a German father. This means shes (stunning, right?) got a unique look that not a lot of Western audiences are used to. That gives her an edge and an extra selling point.
3. Shes lived in the States for years
Living abroad is not easy, but after moving to America for college when she was 17 Cinta has learned to call the country home. This means she can socialize with the Hollywood elite more easily, study the lay of the land and know the competition better.
