Brilio.net/en - Everybodyespecially little girlsmust know Barbie, the high-fashion woman figure doll that has family and friends: Ken, Skipper, Stacie, Kelly, Todd, Teresa, Nikki, Christie and others. Many also know that Barbies maker, Ruth Handler, named the dolls after her own children. But not many know the origin of Barbie doll before she becomes a fashion icon for girls and teenagers.
Barbie doll appearance was actually copied by German adult gag-gift escort doll. The famous Lilli doll was actually a cartoon character created by Reinhard Beuthien for Bild-Zeitung tabloid in Hamburg. The tabloid had a comic strip titled Bild Lilli as a post-war gold-digging buxom broad who got by in life seducing wealthy male suitors. The main characters name was Lilli.

Lilli was quick-witted and liked to talk back to male authoritiescertainly a different character than the nave Barbie. In 1953 the tabloid decided to bring Lilli to life by producing a three-dimensional doll that sold as an adult novelty. The dolls were sold at bars, tobacco kiosks and adult toy stores. The German brochure from the 1950s said Lilli was always discreet and became the star of every bar. She had various clothes that sold separately so you can change her outfits to fit any party theme. Lilli became so famous that little girls started to want her as play dolls, too. At the time girls could only play fashion with paper dolls and paper clothes.

Apparently parents did not consider Lilli was appropriate for children but somehow Ruth Handler saw the doll perfect for her daughter Barbara to play with. When Handler came to visit Europe, she brought a few of Lilli dolls home and started to redesign it to make it proper for her daughter and the Mattel company, which her husband Elliot and his partner Matt built, started to manufacture it and introduced it as a play doll at New York toy fair on March 9, 1959.
