Indonesian Students Evacuated Following Earthquake In The Philippines

Brilio.net/en - At least 14 students of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) have been evacuated after twin earthquake swarmed Batangas, Philippines. Those students were participants of Asia Pacific inter-university basketball tournament.

Ministrys director for the protection of Indonesian nationals and entities abroad, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal in a press release on Sunday confirmed that they have taken those students to the Embassy in Manila.

According to Iqbal, they continued to coordinate with the Indonesian community in the location and they were reportedly safe.

Based on data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are 7,567 Indonesians who live in the Philippines with 3.384 of them are under auspices of Indonesian Embassy in Manila and the rest are in the Davao Consulate's territory.

Earlier, a series of earthquake struck Batangas on April 5 and 8, 2017 that registered magnitudes 5.7 to 5.9 on the Richter scale, respectively.

Although there has been no reports of casualties, local media proclaimed the physical damage was quite sever in some parts of region.
