Brilio.net/en - A doctor from Johns Hopkins University in Washington, United States, is preparing to perform a penis transplant surgery for a war veteran. If it is successful, similar surgeries will be possible for thousands of ex-soldier who suffered heavy injuries on the battlefield.

The unnamed veteran suffers an injury in his genital area because he was hit by a bomb when serving in Afghanistan. The transplant surgery is estimated to last for 12 hours, including reconstructing muscles for urinary and sexual function.

However, it is estimated that this trial patient is unable to have more children because of the testicles an organ that produces sperm is still untransplantable, as reported by AFP, Tuesday (8/12).

The John Hopkins Hospital is scheduling a variety of experimental surgeries, including vital organ transplantations to 60 patients where they use a deceased persons organ donation.

The penis transplantation would be very useful for the 1,367 US troops who could no longer use their genitals normally due to injuries while serving in Afghanistan or Iraq from 2003 to 2013.

The first successful penis transplantation surgery happened in South Africa. Besides successfully reconstructed, the man will still be able to have a child because his testicles will still function normally.
