Brilio.net/en - Semarang, the cosmopolitan capital of Central Java is probably best known for its lumpia, a spring roll-like savory snack made of thin pastry with various fillings. But there’s a lot more to it if you’re willing to explore, and Sam Poo Kong Temple one of its best landmark.
The city’s oldest Chinese temple sits on 1,000 square meters of land and for its size doesn’t draw much of a crowd compared to other destinations in Central Java, but it’s a really special place!

Established by the Chinese Muslim sailor, Admiral Cheng Ho (Zheng He) 600 years ago, Sam Poo Kong was built as Semarang boomed with trade, much like it does today. The temple has undergone several updates and now caters to worshippers from multiple faiths and ethnicities, including muslims, buddhists, Javanese and Chinese.
