Jakarta gubernatorial candidate Anies Baswedan sent out tweets praising his opponent Agus Yudhoyono this afternoon
Agus lost the Jakarta election's first leg with less than 20 percent of votes in all exit polls and quick count.
“Agus Yudhoyono is a young man full of potential. He clearly will be one of leaders for this nation soon. We are proud of him,” he said on Twitter.
Agus tried to call Anies and his running mate Sandiaga Uno yesterday to congratulate them, but the pair did not answer.
“Last night I tried to call Agus Yudhoyono back after he tried to call me. I could not answer (his call) because I was live in Mata Najwa," he said, referring to a talk show aired on Metro Tv.
The former Education Minister also praised Agus for being a good role model.
“This election is a real example that just because you are rivals, it doesn’t mean that you have to be enemies. Agus Yudhoyono has been a good example for all of us," he said.
"Sylviana Murni is a strong woman who has contributed abudantly to the development of the city she loves dearly. I learn from her.
“Mas Agus Yudhoyono also said he desires Jakarta that is built not only by the materials but also by its humans. We share the same spirit. So we will welcome this second round with the same spirit. [We are] inviting all residents to make Jakarta developed [and] its people happy.”
Anies Baswedan and his running mate Sandiaga Uno will compete in the second leg of election along with Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat on April 19.
