Brilio.net/en - Did you know that Indonesia celebrates National Film Day every March 30? The date was taken from the first day of shooting of Darah & Doa (or known as Long March of Siliwangi for international screenings) movie that was directed by Usmar Ismail in 1950. This is the first movie Indonesia has ever produced. Ever since, Indonesia had produced many successful movies, as reported by bintang.com.

Apart from the long absence from 1993 to 2002, Indonesian cinema is being productive with at least one movie coming out per week. The following is a list of the 10 best movies compiled from getscoop. Theyll give you an insight into the Indonesian cinematography for the past 66 years:

1. First Indonesian movie Darah & Doa (Long March of Siliwangi)

Directed by Usmar Ismail, this movie is considered the first Indonesian local movie production with the true Indonesian character. This is also the first movie directed, produced and played all by Indonesian people. The production house belonged to Perusahaan Film Nasional Indonesia (shortened Perfini or Indonesias National Film Company). Years before, movie Loetoeng Kasaroeng was first produced in 1926 in Indonesia but directed by Dutch directors G. Kruger and L. Heuveldorp.

2. First Indonesian movie in colour Sembilan

Sembilan (Nine) was produced in 1967 with director Wim Umboh and starred Gaby Mambo and W.D. Mochtar. This is a historical movie as it is the first coloured movie produced by Indonesia, apart from the production process conducted in a lab in Tokyo, Japan. The movie takes place in Pantai Bukit area, which had two tribal chiefs but took over by pirates. Nine warriors came from all over Indonesia rescued the tribe.

3. Movie that won the most awards of Piala Citra Ibunda

Festival Film Indonesia (FFI) is held once a year to award film industry in each category. The trophy is Piala Citra. Ibunda (Mother) in 1986 have been won the most trophies. Teguh Karya was the one who directed the drama. He described the mother figure in the most mysterious way among her children. Ibunda won the best director, best actress in a leading role, best actress in a supporting role, best original screenplay, best cinematography, best artistic, best sound, and best music at the ceremony.

4. Movie with most critics and triggered the returning of Piala Citra Ekskul

This is the only time a Piala Citra had to be returned by its winner. A group of young filmmakers that spontaneously joined the Community of Indonesias Film Society (Komunitas Masyarakat Perfilman Indonesia or KMPI) protested the disappointing judgment that Ekskul (Extra Curricular) won best movie in 2006. The controversial victory was followed by a summon letter regarding music pirating. Universal Music Indonesia claims that the movie directed by Nayato Fio Nuala was copyrighting the music score from Hollywood movies Gladiator (starring Russell Crowe) and Munich (directed by Steven Spielberg). Ekskul used Elysium from Gladiator and Remembering Munich (John Williams) from Munich.

5. First movie to get in the Box Office The Raid: Redemption

This is the first Indonesian movie that ever got into the box office and stayed in the number 11 spot for 9 weeks in the bestselling movies in theaters around the US. The movie highlights the original Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat was screened in 857 theaters in USA, as well in other countries. The Raid won 8 awards worldwide and grossed an income of more than USD 4 million.

6. First Superhero Movie Rama Superman Indonesia

The movie starred August Melasz (Rama), Yenny Rachman (Lia), and Boy Shahlani (Boy) and told a story of newspaper boy that suddenly gets superpowers. Directed by Frans Totok Ars, the movie could not be in the international market because of the copyright infringement of Superman. Ramas character is also similar to Clark Kents. After Rama Superman Indonesia, this year Indonesia will have Valentine (starred Estelle Linden) and Garuda Superhero for your superhero viewing pleasures.

7. First Movie with 4 Directors Kuldesak

Released in the reformation era, Kuldesak (Cul de Sac) is directed by a surprising number of directors, which are Riri Riza, Nan Achnas, Mira Lesmana, and Rizal Mantovani. Ahmad Dhani, who is currently running for the mayor of Jakarta, composed the score while a star studded cast graces the screen, including Oppie Andaresta, Bianca Adinegoro, Wong Aksan and Sophia Latjuba starred in the movie. Unfortunately the movie screened only in selected theaters as it was not considered to have commercial value. Of that misfortune, the movie gained much praise, especially for the success of four directors working together.

8. Movie with the most sequels Catatan Si Boy (Boys Diary)

The main characters, Boy (Onky Alexander) and Emon (Didi Petet), are the favourites since their first appearance in 1987. This made the producer wanted to create its sequels, which all were big success in the market, up until the fifth in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991 respectively. In 2011 a new movie was made inspired by the original series by the name of Catatan Harian Si Boy. The first movie made its own record as the bestselling movie with an audience of 313,516, which was a big number back in the 1980s.

9. Bestselling Comedy Movie Maju Mundur Kena

The epic Indonesian comedy movie starred Dono, Kasino and Indro who are also known as the Warkop DKI group. They starred in at least 34 comedy movies of which Maju Mundur Kena (Hit Back and Forth) is the bestselling one. According to Data Film Indonesia, the movie directed by Arizal became the first bestselling in Jakarta in 1983 with 658,896 audiences. The next bestselling movie is Comic 8 in 2014 by Anggy Umbara with 1,624,067 audiences. What made it special is Indro also starred in the movie, as well as its sequel. Both of his partners Dono and Kasino had passed away.

10. First Musical Movie 3 Dara

In 1956 Indonesia had its first musical movie. 3 Dara (Three Girls) directed by Usmar Ismail and starring Chitra Dewi (Nunung), Mieke Wijaya (Nana), and Indriati Iskak (Neni). Supporting the three girls, Rendra Karno, Bambang Irawan, and Fifi Young also played in the movie and made 3 Dara win an award in Festival Film Indonesia 1960. The best music was awarded to Sjaiful Bachri as the music director. The next musical movie was also directed by Usmar Ismail, Asmara Dara, was also a success. Lets hope Indonesia will make more musical movie in the future.
