This kind of building, called astepwell, is commonly found in western India. One is the Chand Baori or Chand Baoli, which getsits name from King Chandra of the Chauhan Dynasty, who ordered the construction of this structure between 800 and 900 AD.

The stepwell was dedicated to the goddess of joy and happiness, Hashat Mata, whosetemple is not far away.



Located at Abhaneri village, 95 kilometers from Jaipur, Chand Baori is one of the oldest, largest, deepest and most beautifulstepwell.

It contains 3,500 steps over 13 stories, and extends about 30 meters underground.
