Brilio.net - TikTok has once again become a sensation with unique phenomena that have amazed many people. Recently, a video uploaded by a man to the TikTok account @muhamadlutfifuad became a public debate. In the upload, it was discovered that a man was amazed by the statue in the Old City of Jakarta.
It is known that it is a statue of Meriam Si Jagur which is part of history. However, this man felt that the placement of the Meriam Si Jagur statue was not appropriate. The reason is, the statue shows a hand with a thumb inserted between the index finger and middle finger. This kind of pose is a gesture of impoliteness in Indonesia. So he asked why such a pose could be displayed in public.
The man admitted he was worried because there were so many children coming to the area. Because he didn't know exactly what the statue was about, he questioned whether the pose couldn't be changed because it would certainly show something unethical.
After making a lot of noise on social media, this man's action became the target of netizens. Many of them said that the man had never studied history.
"Sorry bro, if you studied Indonesian history you would definitely understand what that means," reminded a netizen.
However, the man insisted on maintaining his argument. According to him, even though it existed in history, this kind of finger pose now has a negative meaning. So it is not suitable for public display.
"It's not a historical problem. The problem is that symbols have different meanings nowadays. Imagine children showing symbols like that to their friends," he defended in the comments.
After investigation, research entitled "The Meaning of Signs of Sexual Gestures on Meriam Si Jagur at the Fatahilah Museum, Jakarta" states that this pose has historical content. In the video you can see a cannon called the jagur cannon.
The Si Jagur cannon is an ancient cannon left by the Portuguese which is now in the courtyard of the Fatahillah Museum, Jakarta. The cannon has a length of 3.85 meters and a caliber of 25 cm and weighs up to 3.5 tons. Si Jagur is decorated with various carvings, including Portuguese symbols and a hand carving that has become controversial.
The cannon was made in Macau in 1641 by a Portuguese engineer named Manuel Tavares Bocarro. Even though it was made in Portugal, the cannon belonged to the Dutch as war booty because they succeeded in capturing Malacca from the Portuguese. Si Jagur was taken to Batavia (now Jakarta) to guard the port. Until now, the cannon is on display in the museum.
The meaning of the middle pose which shows the ponographic symbol apparently has several meanings. In the research mentioned above, one of the reasons is Mano in Fica, which is a Portuguese hand gesture that symbolizes good luck.
Apart from that, there are also those who give the meaning of Kuku Pancanaka or hand gestures in Hindu-Buddhist culture which symbolize the phallus and yoni or fertility and strength. So the actual meaning of the cannon is not negatively charged.
This video certainly became controversial and attracted the attention of netizens. Many do not agree with the narrative presented by the video maker. Apart from that, there were also those who gave suggestions that it would be better if there were information below the cannon so that many people would not misunderstand.
"My suggestion might be to include historical information below it so as not to cause misunderstanding," wrote the account @theojiuniverse.
"Okay, there is a historical meaning, but nowadays the meaning of jir is different," said the account @vinsen_rafael
"In fact, if a small child asks, understand the child so they know history and gain knowledge," explained the account @qimqima
"Well, it's been a long time since I was crazy. Every time I went to the old town from junior high school, Anjai," commented the account @sipalinghtswkwk_.
From the time the video was posted until this article was written, the @muhamadlutfifuad account has gathered 3.9 million views. Apart from that, there were also 131,100 accounts that gave likes and 7199 comments.
