Over 17.000 athletes were atthe Maracana stadium representing their countries. Even the smallest delegation -Etimoni Timuani, the onlyathlete fromthe Polynesian archipelago of Tuvalu.
This is the first time in the Summer Olympics have beenhosted in a South American country. Gustavo Kuerten, the internationalTennis star,proudly carried the flame to the stadium to officially start the competition.
