Brilio.net - Fourth Wing is a new adult novel in the fantasy romance genre, or 'romantasy', by American author Rebecca Yarros published in 2023. This is the first book in The Empyrean series. Released on May 2, 2023, the novel achieved viral success in the TikTok reader community, BookTok, which contributed to its success in reaching the No. 1 position on The New York Times bestseller list.

Fourth Wing Synopsis

"Fourth Wing" follows Violet Sorrengail, a twenty-year-old girl who was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant to live a quiet life among books and history. However, her strict mother, a general, orders her to join the hundreds of candidates who are striving to become Navarre's elite: the dragon riders.

With a smaller and more fragile body than the others, Violet faces the threat of death at all times because dragons will not bond with "fragile" humans they will burn them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, many will kill Violet to increase their own chances. Others will kill her simply because she is the daughter of a general, such as Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wing leader in the Riders Quadrant.

Violet must use every ounce of wit she can muster to survive. Meanwhile, the war outside grows increasingly deadly, the kingdoms protections begin to fail, and the death toll continues to rise. Worse still, Violet begins to suspect that the leaders are hiding a terrible secret. At Basgiath War College, everyone has an agenda because once inside, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Fourth Wing Review

This book is an addictive fantasy romance read. Violet, the strong main character, is thrown into the brutal world of Basgiath War College. Despite her disability, Violet refuses to give up, providing a prominent representation of disability.

The inclusion of dragons in this story is very interesting, as seen from the book cover and synopsis. The little dragon illustrations at the beginning of each chapter are a fun added detail. Violet and her friends train for weeks to become strong enough to pair up with dragons and become dragon riders. These dragon riders are part of the Navarre military whose purpose is to keep the peace and defend the borders.

Rebecca Yarros' writing style is easy to follow and keeps the reader wanting to keep reading. The interactions between Violet and her obvious rival-turned-love interest are entertaining. While there are a few things that feel rushed, such as the development of their relationship, the tension and spice of the story are still engaging.

Despite its fairly predictable plot, "Fourth Wing" is still a fun read. It's more of a comfort read than a literary treat, especially for the more critical reader.

"Fourth Wing" is still enjoyable and worth a read. It lives up to expectations, especially for less critical readers. "Fourth Wing" is sure to please readers looking for their next fantasy romance.
