9 Unique jazz shows only held in Indonesia

An opinion saying jazz is a music genre for the elite is now disputable because it has now become popular among the masses. If in Europe jazz is played in fancy theaters, jazz in Indonesia is performed in unique places. Are you curious yet?

1. Jazz Atas Awan, Dieng

The first unique jazz show comes from Dieng, Central Java. Jazz Atas Awan (Jazz Above the Clouds) a part of the Dieng Culture Festival held in the Dieng Plateau in July and August. The show attracts the attention of a lot of foreign tourists. While enjoying the solemn rhythm of jazz, audiences can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of Dieng.

For me, this is a totally unique show. We can enjoy the music while camping and this is truly Indonesia. As far as I know, there is no such event outside Indonesia, said Tamam (23), a student of art who never misses Jazz Atas Awan.

2. Jazz Gunung, Bromo

Mount Bromo has been a favorite tourism destination in East Java for a long time. It becomes more exciting when famous Indonesian and international jazz musicians perform at Jazz Gunung (Mountain Jazz) every year. Hearing the melody of jazz while looking at the sunset, what an undeniable favor, said a twitter account, @haningsejati.

3. Jazz Pantai, Banyuwangi

I think Indonesian jazz shows are often held in the mountains or on a plateau, but Banyuwangi becomes the first place to hold a jazz show on the beach and it was absolutely fun, said Rio (32), a private employee who once enjoyed the Jazz Pantai (Beach Jazz) . 4. Mahakam Jazz Fiesta, Samarinda

People in Samarinda can also show their enthusiasm towards Jazz. The Mahakam Jazz Fiesta is an international-level jazz festival thats much-anticipated by musicians and jazz lovers. The unique thing about this jazz festival is that its held on the banks of the Mahakam River.

Its nice to be involved in the Mahakam Jazz Fiesta, because only in Indonesia, jazz can be enjoyed in different ways, wrote Dwiki Dharmawan, an Indonesian jazz musician on his twitter account, @dwiki_dharmawan.

5. Ngayogjazz, Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta also does not want to lose in presenting a unique and different jazz show. As a city which is synonymous with cultural identity, Yogyakarta holds Ngayogjazz in the many touristic villages in turns, so that jazz can be enjoyed in the midst of beautiful village.

The concept of Ngayogjazz is cool, we can enjoy the music in the middle of the village and interact with local people, said Dito (26), a postgraduate student of Gadjah Mada University.

6. Maratua Jazz, Berau

Maratua Island which is often dubbed as a paradise in the north of Indonesia presents a jazz festival which can be enjoyed alongside the natural beauty of the islands rich fauna and flora.

Having a vacation on the Maratua Island while enjoying jazz is a very interesting trip, explained Jim (20), a student of international relations at the University of Indonesia.

7. Prambanan Jazz, Prambanan

Having a vacation in Central Java is incomplete without visiting Prambanan Temple. This tourist destination close to Yogyakarta is now even more enticing with presence of Prambanan Jazz.

A month before the show is held, I had bought a ticket for the Prambanan Jazz because I was sure that it would be a very pleasant event by enjoying the view of Prambanan Temple at night while watching the performances of famous jazz musicians, said Diva (22), a student of political science of Muhammadiyah University in Yogyakarta.

8. Makassar Jazz Festival, Makassar

Its really something new, for being able to enjoy the night atmosphere in the Rotterdam Castle by watching the performances of jazz musicians, said Novi (21), a student of electrical engineering from Hasanuddin University.

Visiting Fort Rotterdam is always identical to studying history. But a jazz event within the walls of the fort makes all the difference in a historical place that was once the headquarters of the VOC (Dutch East India Company).

9. Ramadan Jazz Festival

The last unique jazz show comes from Jakarta that is held in the courtyard of Cut Meutia Mosque, Central Jakarta where jazz lovers can gather and enjoy the performances of several popular musicians. Uniquely, as the name implies, this jazz festival is held in the month of Ramadan. What a unique show, we can enjoy jazz in the atmosphere of Ramadan, commented Niko (23) who always spares time to attend the festival.
