Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo has confirmed Basuki Tjahaja Purnama's official resignation as Governor of Jakarta on Wednesday.
The resignation letter was filed one day after Ahokwithdrew his appeal against his conviction for insulting Koran.
"Ahok's status has been inactive, temporarily suspended under Presidential Decree No.56 of 2017 dated May 12, 2017. On May 23, 2017, Ahok submitted his resignation to the President of the Republic Indonesia as Governor of Jakarta, one day after his appeal withdrawal," said Tjahjo in a ministry's press release, Wednesday.
Thus, he continues, Ahok needs to be immideiately dismissed permanently and his deputy Djarot Saiful Hidayat will replace him as the definitive governor.
"The vacant position of deputy governor will not be filled because of the remaining period, which is less than 18 months," he explained.
The senior politician of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle stated that Ahok's administrative dismissal is awaiting a letter from the Jakarta High Court regarding the appeal revocation.
