Brilio.net - Stone mortar is a traditional kitchen tool that is still widely used today. This tool is made of natural stone that is specially carved to grind cooking spices. However, because it is made of porous stone, mortar is prone to mold growth if not cleaned and maintained properly.

Mold on stone mortars can appear due to several factors such as high humidity, improper storage, or less than optimal cleaning after use. In addition to being unhygienic, moldy stone mortars can also affect the taste and aroma of ground spices.

Here's how to clean a moldy stone mortar using ingredients that are easy to find in the kitchen:

1. Cleaning with Coarse Salt and Lime

Coarse salt has a texture that can lift dirt and mold, while lime contains citric acid that is effective in killing microorganisms. Sprinkle enough coarse salt on the surface of the mortar, then rub it using a piece of lime in a circular motion. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes for the salt and lime solution to soak in. Rinse with clean water and dry in the sun.

2. Using a mixture of vinegar and warm water

Vinegar is a natural cleaner that is effective in removing mold. To clean a moldy stone mortar with vinegar, mix white vinegar and warm water in a 1:1 ratio. Pour the solution over the entire surface of the mortar and let it soak for 30 minutes. Scrub using a soft brush or sponge, then rinse thoroughly. Make sure there is no vinegar smell left.

3. Combination of Scrub Ash and Laundry Soap

Scouring ash has mild abrasive properties that are safe for cleaning stone mortars. Mix the ash with a little dish soap to form a paste. Spread the paste over the entire surface of the mortar and grind, scrubbing gently using a soft brush. Let stand for 10 minutes before rinsing with running water. This method is effective for cleaning moldy stone mortars that have turned black.

4. Soaking with Hot Water and Table Salt

Prepare boiling hot water and add 3-4 tablespoons of table salt. Pour the solution into the mortar until the entire surface is submerged. Leave it for 1 hour so that the heat and salt react to lift the mold. After that, scrub using a soft brush and rinse with clean water. This method is suitable for routine cleaning.

5. Treatment using turmeric juice

Turmeric has natural anti-fungal properties and is safe to use on kitchen utensils. Grate 2-3 pieces of turmeric, squeeze out the juice and mix with a little water. Apply this mixture to the entire surface of the moldy mortar. Let it sit for 2-3 hours or until dry. Scrub using a soft brush and rinse thoroughly.

After cleaning the mortar using the methods above, here are some care tips to prevent mold from growing back:

- Dry the mortar with a clean cloth after washing.
- Dry in the sun periodically
- Store in a dry and well-ventilated place
- Avoid storing the mortar in a wet condition.
- Clean immediately after use

By implementing the right way to clean a moldy stone mortar and regular maintenance, the mortar will remain clean and safe to use to grind cooking spices. Choose a cleaning method that suits the level of mold and condition of the mortar for maximum results.

If the fungus is still difficult to remove after trying some of the methods above, it can be combined with a special stone cleaner sold on the market. However, prioritize the use of natural ingredients first because they are safer for cooking utensils.
