Derawan has four popular islands, namely Sangalaki, Kakaban, Derawan, and Maratua Island, which are directly bordered by Malaysia and the Philippines. Although it is positioned at the edge of Indonesian territory, Maratua island still included in the district of Berau, East Kalimantan.
Maratua, the paradise island
Seen on the map, Maratua Island is shaped like an inverted U. The clean white sands, combined with the blue sea water stretch as far as the eyes could see. The beauty of Maratua Island is more exposed because of the beautiful marine life.
Maratua Island consists of several small islands and the main island. The small islands are scattered in the Maratua bay are named Sidau, Semut, Andongabu, Sangalan, Bulingisan, Nisakoh, Bakungan, Nunukan, and Pabahanan. Maratua Island is inhabited by 3,168 people. Most of the population living in Maratua are fishermen.
The largest green turtle habitat in Indonesia
Aside from the beauty of its natures, Maratua Beach is also the habitat of green turtles. Indeed the island is a preferred spot for turtles to nest and forage. The large number of the turtle population on the island made it known as the Turtle Capital of Indonesia.
Meet the stingrays
In Maratua, tourists can see stingrays directly in their habitat and interact with them. The animal with two meter fins can be found easily on Sangalaki Island, located 2 hours from Maratua
The most famous diving spots in this area are Channel Entrance, Coral Gardens, Town, Sandy Ridge, Manta Run, Manta Point, Sherwood Forest, Manta Parade, Manta Avenue, Ridge, Light House and the Rockies.
There are many activities you can do during your travel in Maratua such as snorkeling, diving and island hopping. This is one of the best examples of Indonesian natural beauty in the eastern part of Kalimantan, which you should put on your travel list.
